JOB TITLE: Building Custodian WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal PAY GRADE: PG 1 DAYS IN POSITION 260 DEPT./SCHOOL: Assigned Campus
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations at assigned campus.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification: None required Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of basic techniques of minor repairs and building maintenance Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment and supplies Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies Ability to work well with others

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Develop and maintain a cleaning schedule to include the cleaning of floors, chalkboards, rugs, walls, lockers, blinds, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, restrooms, and the filling of tissue, paper towel, and soap dispensers.
2. Keep the school building and student areas neat and clean.
3. Assume responsibility for opening and closing the building each school day; establish procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
4. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
5. Observe and inform supervisor of safety hazards.
6. Comply with local laws and procedures for the recycling, storage, and disposal of trash.
7. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repairs needed to the principal.
8. Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
9. Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment; requisition additional supplies as needed.
10. Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed by the principal.
11. Operate tools and equipment following established safety procedure and rules.
12. Adjust thermostats according to established temperature ranges.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, electric drill, shampooer, and ladder.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands: Reading; ability to understand verbal instructions.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Strenuous walking, standing, and climbing; heavy lifting and carrying. Work inside; exposed to dust, toxic chemicals, and materials, bodily wastes and fluids; and slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Work on ladders. Ability to work independently.
